Around Christmas 2010 the Abrahams and Coffey families felt God strengthening the burden for evangelism and church planting. Together for the next six months, we sought God’s will and direction in prayer and studied through the book of Acts with our families. On the 19th June 2011, with the full support of the church leaders, we announced to the congregation at Tralee Baptist Church that God was leading us to form a Church planting team. In the months ensuing the two families spent worked through values, vision, goals, methodology, finances and also surveyed neighbouring towns. Eventually God led us to Killorglin. This town of 4400 is the gateway to the Iveragh Peninsula and a strategic town on the Ring of Kerry.
On the 15th January 2012 Killorglin Baptist Church had its first worship service at the Coffey’s home, ten minutes from Killorglin. There were 22 on the first Sunday. Frank preached the first sermon, ‘Adoption the highest privilege of the believer’.
On Sunday 19th February 2012 Tralee officially commisioned the church planting team to Killorglin. We eventually rented premises at 3 Langford Street and the Lord allowed us to have the first service on Sunday 20th May 2012. On 23rd February 2014 the church started meeting in the Chapel on the Hill.
Since January 2017 we have refocused our church planting strategy to the wider area of Mid-Kerry, to include the towns of Firies, Castlemaine, Milltown and Killorglin. As a result, we voted to change the name from Killorglin Baptist Church to Community Baptist Church.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
